Discover the fundamentals of woodworking in a one-day hands-on workshop designed for complete beginners. Participants will learn essential woodworking skills, including basic joinery, wood surface preparation, and simple wood coating, while gaining experience with commonly used hand tools and power tools. The workshop centres around making a lidded wooden box. This project that may look simple, yet represents one of the most essential starting points in woodworking. It introduces fundamental techniques, accuracy, and craftsmanship that every beginner should experience.
No prior woodworking experience is required. Step-by-step guidance is provided throughout the session, and each participant will complete a finished wooden box to take home.

This hands-on workshop introduces essential cabinet construction techniques commonly used in modern woodworking. Participants will focus on basic surface lamination, edging, trimming, drawer sliders, and the safe operation of power tools. No prior woodworking experience is required, guidance is provided step by step as you build.
All fees include materials, safety goggles, face masks, and lunch. Each participant will complete a functional laminated side table and take the finished project home.
Objective:
To introduce fundamental cabinet making techniques through the hands-on construction of a functional bedside cabinet with drawers.
To equip participants with practical skills in surface lamination and hardware installation, including edging, trimming, and drawer slider fitting commonly used in modern cabinet making.
To build confidence in the safe and proper use of woodworking power tools, enabling participants with no prior experience to complete a cabinet project independently.

Discover the art of wood turning in this hands-on workshop, designed for beginners to create their own festive Christmas ornament. Participants will learn essential wood turning techniques, including selecting and using different types of turning gouges, as well as how to sharpen them for precise, safe cutting. The workshop covers spindle turning basics, tool handling, and safety practices while working on a lidded wooden ornament. No prior experience is required, step-by-step guidance is provided as you turn.
Each participant will complete a beautiful hand-turned wooden ornament to take home, gaining practical skills in wood shaping, finishing, and craftsmanship that can be applied to future projects.

Introduction to Wood Turning Tools and Safety: Learn about spindle turning tools, including gouges, chisels, and safe handling practices.
Types of Turning Gouges and Sharpening Techniques: Understand the function of each gouge and practice sharpening for optimal performance.
Spindle Turning Techniques: Hands-on practice shaping the wooden blank into a festive Christmas ornament.
Finishing and Polishing: Sanding, smoothing, and applying a finish to complete a polished, take-home ornament.

This course is ideal for anyone working with solid wood who wants to develop the ability to identify commercial timber species in Malaysia. Participants will study the anatomy of wood to recognize distinguishing features, supported by hand lenses for close examination of real wood samples. The course also uses photomacrographs to illustrate key identifying traits. At the end of this course, participants will be able to identify commonly-known species, such as Chengal, Merbau, Kempas and many more.
Objective:
To understand the fundamentals of wood anatomy and how anatomical features distinguish different timber species.
To recognize key identifying features of Malaysian commercial timber through photomacrographs and visual analysis.
To develop the ability to identify real wood samples through careful observation and comparison with photomacrographs.

Learn the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Wood Carving through a hands-on, guided workshop. This course introduces three core carving techniques of Intaglio Carving (阴雕), Relief Carving (阳雕), and Pierced Carving (镂雕) which are commonly found in traditional architectural and decorative woodwork. Participants will focus on proper knife handling, sharpening techniques, and safe carving practices while developing control and confidence with carving tools. As the course progresses, participants will combine all three techniques into a completed carved panel and discover the cultural meaning behind traditional Chinese motifs. No prior carving experience is required, step-by-step guidance is provided throughout the journey.
All fees include materials and loaning of carving knives. Each participant will complete a carving piece and take the finished project home.

Serve as a beginner-friendly introduction to traditional wood carving. Participants will learn essential knife handling, basic sharpening, and foundational carving techniques widely used in Chinese woodcraft.
Advance Level
An advanced level that integrates all three carving techniques into a complete project. Participants will further develop sharpening skills and gain insight into the philosophy and symbolism behind traditional Chinese motifs.

Beginner Level – Introduction to Traditional Chinese Wood Carving Techniques (4 sessions)
Participants will learn three fundamental carving methods:
Intaglio Carving (阴雕)
A technique where lines and patterns are carved inward into the surface, creating depth through engraved details.
Relief Carving (阳雕)
The background is carved away so the design stands raised above the surface, creating a bold and dimensional effect.
Pierced Carving (镂雕)
A more intricate technique where sections of the wood are carefully removed to create open, lace-like patterns.
Advance Level – Advanced Carving & Cultural Understanding (4 sessions)
Learn carving knife sharpening techniques
Combine all three carving techniques into a single carved panel
Explore traditional Chinese carving motifs and the cultural meanings behind each design

Meet Your Master: Master Tong
Master Carver Mr. Tong (Tong Wing Cheong) is the founder of Keng Hwa Carving Studio in George Town, Penang, dedicated to preserving the traditional art of Chinese wood carving. After completing a Master’s degree in cultural anthropology and folklore in Taiwan, he returned to Malaysia and apprenticed under renowned master Yeap Siew Kay before establishing his studio in 2018. His intricate carvings can be found in temples, Peranakan homes, heritage buildings, and ceremonial artworks across Penang. Passionate about safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, Mr. Tong actively conducts workshops and mentorship to pass this vanishing craft to the next generation.
*Note: Both beginner and advance classes will be conducted by the Master. Language: English, Malay, Chinese.

Provide a strong foundation in Traditional Malay Wood Carving. Participants will learn proper tool handling, basic carving techniques, and understand the philosophy and symbolism behind traditional plant and floral motifs.
Advanced Level
Develop deeper technical and creative skills by mastering sharpening techniques, motif design, and composition. Participants will learn to create and carve their own original Malay wood carving designs.

Beginner Level – Introduction to Traditional Malay Wood Carving (4 Sessions)
Participants will learn the fundamental carving techniques:
Ukiran Tebuk Timbul Bersilat (Raised Pierced Carving / Bas-Relief)
A technique where the motif is raised from the background while incorporating elegant flowing “silat” curves typical of Malay carving.
Ukiran Tebuk Timbus Bersilat (Deep-cut Caring with Fenestrations)
A decorative technique combining pierced openings with refined carved surfaces to create layered depth and intricate patterns.
Participants will also explore the meaning behind traditional plant and floral motifs, and how natural forms are abstracted into the distinctive language of Malay wood carving.
Advanced Level – Design, Sharpening & Creative Development (4 Sessions)
Learn carving knife sharpening techniques
In-depth study of motif sketching, composition, and arrangement
Develop the skills to design and carve your own original Malay motifs and panels

Meet Your Master: Che Long (Barbossa)
Yunizam Yahaya, also famously known as Che Long, is the founder of Lakarsari Resources and a talented carver based in Penang Island. With extensive experience, Che Long has contributed significantly in terms of ideas and execution in the carving industry in Malaysia. Starting off by learning under Adiguru Norhaiza Noordin, Che Long has grown his talent into specific metal carving. Yunizam specializes in making exquisite and intricate Keris hilts. He subsequently turned his passion in hilt craving into a profession, including being a part of Kraftangan Malaysia and a member of Persatuan Pengukir Malaysia, northern region.
*Note: All beginner classes will be conducted by his apprentices, while advance class will be conducted by the Master. Language: English, Malay, Chinese.
