About Us

Welcome to Rekayu! Our name is a combination of "Reka," which means "to create," and "Kayu," which means "wood" in Bahasa Malaysia. We are a woodworking makerspace based in Penang that is passionate about empowering the next generation with woodworking skills and knowledge as well as design and problem-solving abilities.

We are a part of Penang Science Cluster (PSC), a non-profit STEM Education Hub which runs programmes and courses that positively impact thousands of school kids each year.

We offer enthusiastic makers a fully-equipped woodworking makerspace for them to realise their creative ideas whether through our hobby or foundational courses and workshops, or through our membership programme. Our courses are designed to provide hands-on experience and a deep understanding of woodworking techniques and materials, while our members enjoy the use of a low-dust fully-equipped workshop and the support of a community of makers.

We are also aligned with PSC’s STEM education goals and are an integral part of the ‘A for Arts’ offering in STEAM education. To this end, we are active participants in the various Science Fairs and Events in Penang, while working towards launching an interventional programme for vocationally-inclined schoolkids. This programme will equip them with the necessary design and fabrication skills to gain employment the moment they leave secondary school.

At Rekayu, we believe that woodworking connects us with nature, equips us with valuable problem-solving skills, and allows us to express our creativity. To this end, we are dedicated to building and supporting a community, not just within the woodworking realm but in other fields too.
